Les Pierres Jaumâtres: A natural and legendary site near the Château de Poinsouze campsite

Just 10 km from the Château de Poinsouze campsite, the Pierres Jaumâtres are one of the region’s most fascinating geological curiosities. Nestling on the heights of Mont Barlot, at an altitude of 591 metres, these imposing granite blocks stand in surprising balance, as if nature had played the architect. This listed natural site is both a place of legends and a playground for nature lovers and adventurers.

A fascinating geological site

The Pierres Jaumâtres (Yellow Stones ) are a gravity-defying collection of some forty massive granite blocks stacked one on top of the other. These astonishing rock formations have intrigued visitors for centuries, and their mysterious appearance has given rise to many legends. Their very name, “Jaumâtres”, means “yellow stones”, in reference to the golden hue the rocks take on under certain lights.

A place steeped in legend

The Pierres Jaumâtres are not only a geological curiosity, they are also steeped in mystery and myth. Around these monumental boulders, stories of druids, sacrifices and pagan rites have been woven over the centuries. According to legend, the site was once a sacrificial altar, a place where the druids celebrated their sacred ceremonies. Other tales speak of the tables of the mother goddesses, or of the Devil’s cradle.

These legends give the Pierres Jaumâtres an atmosphere that is both bewitching and mystical, making the site a place where the imaginary takes precedence over reality. George Sand herself, a great lover of the area, used to come here to stroll and contemplate these enigmatic blocks, as did Frédéric Chopin.

A walk in the heart of nature

In addition to their geological and legendary interest, the Pierres Jaumâtres are an ideal place to recharge your batteries. The site is laid out with hiking trails, allowing visitors to stroll among the rocks and enjoy the exceptional panoramic view from the summit of Mont Barlot. On a clear day, it’s possible to admire landscapes stretching across Berry, Bourbonnais and the Boussac Valley.

It’s the perfect place for a family outing to discover the local flora and fauna, while soaking up the mysterious history of the area.

Adventure park and fun activities
