Château de Boussac

Château de Boussac, a historic jewel near the Château de Poinsouze campsite

Just 3 km from the Château de Poinsouze campsite, Château de Boussac is one of the region’s most beautiful fortresses, and a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts. Nestled on a rocky spur, this impressive monument, built in the 15th century by Marshal Jean de Brosse, Joan of Arc’s comrade-in-arms, majestically dominates the Creuse valley.

Its imposing, austere appearance hides a rich and fascinating history, as well as a sumptuously decorated interior that makes it a unique site to discover during your stay in Creuse.

A castle steeped in history

Château de Boussac was built at a time when feudal power was being strengthened. Its strategic location on a hilltop enabled it to keep an eye on the surrounding area and defend the region against possible invasions. While its thick walls and robust towers still evoke its defensive role today, the interior of the château reveals a completely different, more elegant and refined side.

Over the centuries, the château has played host to many famous personalities. One of the most significant events in its history was the discovery, in 1841, of the famous Lady of the Unicorn hanging by George Sand and Prosper Mérimée during their visit. This masterpiece, now housed in the Musée de Cluny in Paris, is one of the greatest works of Western medieval art.

An exceptional visit

As you enter the Château de Boussac, you’ll discover an impressive collection of historical objects, period furniture and sublime Aubusson tapestries. The forty rooms spread over four floors are magnificently preserved, offering a journey through the centuries.

Among the treasures to be admired:

  • Monumental fireplaces adorned with the coats of arms of the former owners.
  • Superb 18th-century woodwork, a testament to the refinement of the château’s interior.
  • A unique collection of period furniture and rare objects, testifying to the region’s rich history.
  • And of course, Aubusson tapestries, an exceptional Creuse heritage.

Each room in the château is a veritable plunge into history, offering visitors a glimpse of past centuries through carefully preserved objects.
